Non-surgical Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment refers to the specialist treatment of the teeth and gums, in order to prevent periodontal disease – also known as gum disease. The aim of this type of treatment is to thoroughly clean the pockets around the teeth, in order to prevent damage – or further damage – to the bone that surrounds them. 

Periodontal disease or gum disease is a chronic bacterial infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by plaque build-up, which is often the result of a poor oral hygiene routine. Sometimes, you won’t know you have periodontal disease until you are diagnosed by a professional, although there are symptoms to watch out for.

Each individual is different and will require a different approach. Non-surgical periodontal treatment will sometimes happen over a few appointments to effectively rid the gum pockets of bacteria. Sometimes, patients will need further treatment. This will be discussed with you in-depth if it applies, though.

The best way of preventing periodontal disease is to practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth really well twice a day, ensure you’re flossing regularly, and maintain your dental check-ups and hygiene appointments. At The London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry, our consultants would prefer that you visit the hygienist for a comprehensive clean every three months. The hygienist will remove the plaque that forms over a period of time around the gums – and this isn’t something that can be achieved via brushing alone.

Anyone can get periodontal disease, but it’s true that there are certain individuals who may be more susceptible, due to things like weight, smoking status, genetics and age (if they’re over the age of 65).

Yes, the good news is that the progression of gum disease can be stopped if the bacteria is properly removed from the pockets. Upon visiting the dentist they will recommend a course of treatment for you, this could include regular hygiene appointments every 2 months to begin with until the issues are under control. Then your visits may reduce to 3 to 4 times a year to maintain your gum health. Your at home oral care will play a big part in improving your gum health.
